Halifax, Lloyds, Bank of Scotland DOWN: Thousands unable to access online banking and apps

Online banking sites and apps in Halifax, Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland crashed with thousands of customers reporting problems via DownDetector as they struggle to access cash on Sunday.

Thousands of bank customers are unable to access their accounts this morning as online banking apps and services for Halifax, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland appear to have declined.

People trying to access their accounts across the country have reported seeing “N/A” displayed, instead of their available funds.

The online tool Downdetector suggests that the problem affects people who use Halifax, Lloyds and Bank of Scotland – are part of the Lloyds Banking Group.

It started around 10:30am when a lot of people started reporting issues.

A frustrated customer said: ‘Annoying to find Lloyds online platform down and account balances not available and showing as N/A.

“I called the helpline to confirm who suggested calling back later, but the money is in the account, you just can’t see it!

“Not exactly useful.”

Another added: “Hey @LloydsBank I don’t see my bank account on my app and need to pay my credit card today. Are you aware?”

Another frustrated user said: “I just logged in and it’s not showing anything for my accounts, just saying something went wrong and they can’t show details at the moment.

“I try to call but apparently the telephone operators are ‘extremely busy’. Please help me.”

In response to user concerns, the official Lloyds Twitter account suggested people log out of their accounts and back in to see if that made a difference.

They also suggested using a different platform to verify accounts.

The response left many perplexed as they suggested the problem was bigger than one that can be fixed by turning something on and off again.

One said: “I think you are underestimating the scale of the problem.

“Whatever your escalation policy is, I think you need to start using it.”

Several frustrated people reported long waits to speak to banking agents while waiting to access their money.

A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson said: “We are aware that some of our customers had problems accessing mobile and online banking for a short time this morning. We are sorry about this and our website and app are now back to normal.

It comes as it has been announced that Lloyds, Bank of Scotland and Halifax will close 60 bank branches across the UK as people switch to online banking.

Parent company Lloyds Banking Group said the decision was made as the number of customers now using online banking reached an all-time high this year.

Lloyds says it now has 18.6 million regular online banking customers and more than 15 million mobile app users. These have increased by 12% and 27% respectively over the past two years.

The high street lender said banking centers have been recommended in the towns of Buckingham, Cottingham and Troon by leading ATM company LINK.

Banking hubs have a traditional, mail-operated banking machine where customers can deposit and withdraw cash, remittance checks and check balances.

The full list of branches closing includes 24 Lloyds Bank, 19 Bank of Scotland and 17 Halifax Banks.

Vim Maru, Group Retail Director, Lloyds Banking Group, said: “Just like many other high street businesses, fewer customers are choosing to visit our branches.

“Our branch network is an important way for us to support our customers, but we need to adapt to the significant growth in the number of customers who choose to do most of their day-to-day banking online.”
