The fall season is slowly but surely setting in, as are the seasonal wardrobes that everyone’s been putting off for the past month. Lightweight linen cropped ensembles are replaced by structured trouser suits, pretty sundresses are swapped for LBDs and fisherman sandals are shelved for western boots. Even denim is being reimagined for Fall 2022 based on runway trends seen earlier this year in February.
Yes, instead of your go-to jorts from last summer, maybe it’s time to consider a sturdier, more practical silhouette for the colder months ahead. Luckily, the Fall/Winter 2022 collections are full of inspiration to update traditional denim looks this season.
For those still riding the maximalist bandwagon, the candy-colored denim featured in Rejina Pyo’s fall offerings might be just your gear. Or, perhaps, you’d like a bit of patchwork embellishment or bleached finishes (as seen at Acne) or beaded detailing (a key feature at Givenchy).
Minimalists can also find their way this season with simple, structured pieces that are styled just right – just look to Tibi or Khaite for advice. And for those who can’t part with their denim miniskirts? Fendi’s deconstructed suits might be best when transitioning into cooler temperatures. Or maybe roomy denim pants paired with equally streamlined separates like a boxy blazer and crisp white tee could be your new go-to formula for fall.
Whichever way you cut it, denim is going to reign supreme in the coming month, and who better to guide you in their styling than the editors at TZR? Below, check out the runway looks that are inspiring their jeans dreams this season.

Go for color
“One of the standout denim looks of Fall 2022 for me was this lavender jacket and pant combo from Rejina Pyo’s collection. It immediately took me back to the days of colorful skinny jeans (I used to live in my pastel yellow pair circa early 2000s).This time around, Pyo takes the bright denim trend with slightly baggier pants and an oversized jacket. It’s also a fun take on the Canadian tuxedo and it seems like a look that I can easily pull off without stepping too far out of my fashion comfort zone, so this fall I’m going to give my traditional blue denim pieces a break in favor of a pop of color. — Marina Liao, fashion news editor
“I love wide leg pants, so when I saw a pair of baggy jeans on the catwalk at Khaite’s Fall/Winter 2022 show, I knew this would be my wardrobe for the coming season. Besides the comfort factor of the loose clothing, I’m particularly drawn to how the look evokes a relaxed, laid-back vibe – even though my outfit planning was far from it. crisp white shirt, a tailored double breasted blazer and a structured bag to polish them off. And since I’m a New Yorker and walk to and from most places, I’ll finish with a pair of stylish sneakers like the Gucci’s recent collaboration with Adidas. Kathy Lee, Editor-in-Chief
“I’m not one to stray too far from my favorite mid-rise denim, but I also live for all the oversized pant silhouettes for fall. Acne Studios’ take on the wide-leg denim pant has been over-the-top in all the best ways, from the waistline that almost touches your sternum and a dreamy patchwork finish that gives that fashionable craftsman-inspired vibe that I love. love so much lately. While I don’t think I’ll lean that far into this oversized look, I’m excited to explore a different silhouette. Plus, any kind of embellishment on jeans tugs at my sartorial heart and makes a new denim addition to my (admittedly pretty saturated already) closet worth it. “As a fashion editor for over a decade, I’ve dipped my toe (and sometimes dipped all the way) into my fair share of passing trends. But, at the end of the day, I always feel more like myself in a denim and t-shirt version. This season, my favorite combination starts with wide, oversized jeans with a top that’s both clean and special. And while this formula is certainly quite simple, don’t write it as a single note: going to brunch? Opt for a structured tee or knit with a contrasting waistband. And if you’re planning on wearing your big baggy pants all evening, why not lean into some drama with a sparkly piece? — Alison Syrett, Associate Fashion Editor
It’s in the details
“I’m a creature of habit, especially when it comes to my basics. For fall, I usually reach for lighter faded denim pants with an easy fit and a cozy cream or white sweater (I’ve lost count of the number of ivory tops in my closet). This season will certainly be similar, with some minor but impactful improvements that I gleaned from Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection. I love the look of beaded denim pants paired with a fitted white long sleeve and statement necklace. I’m going to kick things up a notch with a pair of metallic boots and a colorful bag. — Angela Melero, Editor-in-Chief
“Actually, I’m not a big fan of jeans…shock I know. Oddly enough, I find them uncomfortable, although I like the look of the fabric. So I lean more towards denim-inspired looks, or deconstructed pieces like this Fendi set. I love the versatility of jeans to feel both really casual and effortless and also completely retro, and I’m definitely leaning more towards the latter at the moment. That said, a look entirely in denim can be intimidating – I’ve certainly been put off by the look in the past – but I’ve found darker washes of denim to be the sweet spot for me Not to mention that navy denim hues fit in perfect for the fall color palette. Simple and elegant
“Since the start of the pandemic, my jeans have remained mostly unworn. At this point, a lot of them don’t match or work with my current style. So this fall, I’m looking to upgrade my denim. I was particularly inspired by this ultra-chic look from Brandon Maxwell’s Fall/Winter 2022 collection. I love the combination of the delicate white top with the classic distressed straight leg jeans. I’d make this look my own by replacing the oversized knit moment with a comfy sweater tied around my shoulders that can be taken off and put on throughout the day (depending on the ever-changing fall temperatures). Although I love a clutch, I’d swap it for a classic black shoulder bag to keep the look practical for running around New York. — Maggie Haddad, Senior Social Media Strategist
