In academic settings, opportunities to gain hands-on experience are rare. The struggle to gain real-world experience like internships, co-ops, and volunteering is an uncertain battlefield filled with constant struggles and seemingly great mountains to overcome.

The University of Toronto Investment Banking Club (UTIBC) aims to solve this problem by helping its members get their foot in the door of investment banking – a form of banking that helps businesses organize complex financial transactions such as mergers. They do this by providing students with an understanding of the basics of financial theory and experience.

Preparing its members for a career in investment banking

“UTIBC is committed to [promoting] diversity within our organization by welcoming potential members from all years and academic programs,” Thomas Aalbers – UTIBC co-chair – wrote in an email to the university.

The club has focused on the vision of its members graduating with the skills needed to start a career in investment banking. UTIBC offers memberships and programs to train its members in this field to achieve this vision.

The club achieves this by offering a year-long analyst training course designed to help students gain knowledge and experience in analysis. This program is designed for any student with any level of experience and knowledge in this field. Weekly tutorials, modules, intra-club stock simulation competitions and interactive market talks are some of the activities students are exposed to in this program.

The club also includes a membership program with the option for members to join as General or Blue Chip members. General members have access to digital communications, such as newsletters and email reminders about events; the Discord server UTIBC which provides work updates; and access to UTIBC’s online educational resources and recommended reading list.

Blue Chip members receive all the benefits of general membership, plus others, such as invitations to limited capacity opportunities, career preparation guides, recordings of analyst training program sessions, and exclusive discounts on partner media including Wall Street Oasis, Breaking into Wall Street and Corporate Finance Institute. Blue Chip members also have access to mentorship opportunities with upper-year students and club alumni.

The UTIBC Impact Fund

The UTIBC Impact Fund is an initiative the club aims to launch by fall 2023. This initiative aims to give back to the U of T community by contributing financial aid to the university and charities in Toronto. It also aims to allow members to put the theory they learn in the classroom into practice through real-world application under the supervision of the board of directors, portfolio management team and management team. ‘investment.

“We want to leave a lasting legacy for the University of Toronto and the wider community through this initiative,” writes Aalbers.

As the Fall 2023 project date slowly approaches, the debut of Students Giving Back to Students through a club focused on inclusion, education and redistribution is sure to be an exciting historic moment at the U of T.

Bringing diversity to a male-dominated field

“The financial industry has always been dominated by white male bankers. We hope to address this and other dimensions of systemic inequality in the industry by establishing inclusion as a core value at UTIBC,” Aalbers wrote when asked about the open-door policy. all from UTIBC. “We aim to make access to information fairer and breaking into the industry more accessible to students of all backgrounds,” he wrote.

As UTIBC grows, Aalbers hopes to “continue to diversify [the club’s] membership base, expand operations and build lasting relationships with [the U of T] network of alumni, industry professionals and business partners.

With such a strong team, students of any experience level who wish to join this club will certainly be welcomed with open arms.
